There’s something especially meaningful about knitting for a newborn. The process feels slower, more intentional — every stitch made with care for someone just beginning their journey in the world.
This little set was made for a dear friend’s baby and travelled all the way to Rotterdam. Choosing the yarn, knitting each tiny piece, and finally sending it off was a quiet reminder of how handmade items can carry warmth across distance.
Simple, soft, and made with love — just as it should be.
Cozy Craft Studio brought in the Babytoly 100% Organic Cotton just at the right time, when I was searching for a suitable yarn for a newborn.
Although animal fibres are generally warmer and more suitable for winter, I was concerned that a baby’s delicate skin might not tolerate it well. Cotton felt like the safest and most comfortable choice.
After going through the colour list, I chose Duck Egg Blue. Yes, blue — because it’s for a boy 😉
Materials
- Knitting Needles sizes 3.0mm & 3.5mm
- Crochet hook sizes 2.75mm & 3.00mm for cast on and bind off
- Tapestry needle
- Babytoly 100% Organic Cotton , DK weight (8ply) yarns X 6 skeins/50grams
- 6 buttons
- Scissors
Gauge : 24 sts sc x 32 rows sc = 3″ (in double moss stitch pattern)
The pattern
The original free pattern is Lily Rose from DROPS Design at Garnstudio.com.
I renamed mine Lily Iris since I knitted it in blue. I made the 6–9 months size and followed the original pattern without any modifications, apart from using my preferred crochet cast-on and bind-off methods.
For the bind-off, I used a 2.75 mm crochet hook for the ribbing that didn’t require stretch, and a 3.00 mm hook for the ribbing that needed to be stretchy.
After completing the onesie, I still had two donuts of yarn left. So, I decided to make a matching beanie in double moss stitch for the baby, along with a matching scrunchie for mummy. A little matching set for both of them! 🤍
