Crochet Granny Motif Squares Halterneck Top ~ Free Pattern

Do you have scrap yarn, leftover yarns that you have no idea what to do with them? Granny square projects are always the best to use up them.

Hand Dye Yarn by Naywa

This motif square top is turned out from this beautiful hand-dye yarn I custom ordered years ago. I approach my local indie-dyer who was still a new yarn dyer at that time. I asked if she can dye in gradient as I wanted to crochet a mandala. I din expect much as she never dye in the specific technique. I appreciate that she tried it out for me.
The yarn didn’t turn out any gradient effect at the colour change part, and there are more than 3 knots in a hank. So no crochet mandala but re-think on what to make and tadaa! Granny Motif Square.

If you interested to buy hand-dye yarn here in Malaysia, you can check out Yarnbynajwa.

You don’t have to follow my colour arrangement. You can play around with what ever colours of yarn that you have left over. Mixed and matched them. It will be turned out the only one top in the world, unique! Just like my hand-dye yarn which is unique, and this top is the only one.

I found this motif pattern chart in pinterest but I don’t know what the name of this motif.

black motif square

I tried crochet one motif with the black yarn which I planned to make it as the border row to join the motif together. It turn out pretty and a size for one full motif are 2.5inch x 2.5inch

If you wish to make it bigger or smaller you may play around with different type of yarn weight as well as different sizes of hooks. Or you can just add more rows of square to create bigger sizes.

Now the top almost completed. But we need to add on some touching for the border.

Basically, it will be just crochet around the ch5 gap all around with (sc at ch5 gap, ch 1, ch-3 picot, ch 1), and repeat.

Strap

Lastly, crochet a chain strap approximate 40″ long. Weave on top of the garment.

Ok this is the part that I’m super lazy to work on ^^!!! Weave in all the yarn ends and you are done!
