Yarn Purchased with unplanned project – What I can made with just 3 balls of yarn?
I’ve always had a personal preference for natural plant fibers. Living in Malaysia—a tropical country—cotton feels especially suitable because it’s breathable and more comfortable in our hot climate. But sometime, I do have a soft spot for wool too. It’s “lighter” in a way that makes it comfortable to wear, and perfect for when I need something a little cozier.
When I came across La Mia Re-Tweed yarn on Hobiumyarns.com, I immediately fell in love with the texture. It has a jute-like look that I really love, but it’s still soft and totally wearable. I bought it back in September 2021, the color selection wasn’t as broad as it is now—but even then, I struggled to choose because all the shades were beautiful. In the end, I picked up just 3 balls to test it out and get a feel for the yarn. The colors I choose; Light Beige-L098, Dusty Pink-L140 & Green-L173.
La Mia Re-Tweed Yarn Review
Here’s the yarn info from the site, in case you’re curious:
La Mia Re-Tweed Melange Yarn
Content: 40% Wool, 40% Polyester, 20% Acrylic
Yarn Weight: Worsted / Aran
Length: 185 m (100 g)
Recommended Needle: 5 mm (US 8)
Hook Size: 5.5 mm (I)
Gauge: 16 stitches x 23 rows (10×10 cm)

The texture feels slightly rustic but still soft enough for garments. What I love most is the balance between that tweed appearance and comfort—plus, it’s beginner-friendly and holds its shape well.
Project 1: Striped Pullover
At the time, I didn’t have a specific project in mind—just a general idea that I wanted to knit (not crochet), since knitting uses up less yarn. I tend to make simple, wearable basics—something you might call “slow fashion” because I’m not really into fast-changing trends; I just want to feel comfortable and be myself.
Of course, when choosing the colors, I made sure they could be combined well. Looking at the three shades I picked, I imagined a striped pullover. To make the colors pop and give a bit of contrast, I decided to add black yarn in between the stripes—just a clean line to break things up without making it too bold.

I knit the pullover freehand, using a little bit of math for the yoke/raglan shaping and color division. If you’d like to make something similar, you can start with any basic top-down raglan sweater pattern and play around with the color placement. The key is a set of garter stitch (2 rows – 1 knit row & 1 purl row) when working on the black yarn/strip. I’m so happy with how it turned out—and I wear it very frequent, especially on movie dates with my husband (I always get cold in the cinema!).

Project 2: Patchwork-Inspired Sleeveless Top
Initially, I wasn’t sure if 3 balls would be enough for an oversized pullover—but I went for it anyway. I planned short sleeves to save on yarn, and to my surprise, I even had some leftover! With the remaining yarn, I challenged myself to knit a sleeveless top. I had the design in my head and used the gauge from the pullover to calculate the stitch counts.

It actually took me two tries to finish the top. My first attempt turned out way too big—I knit it in two pieces using intarsia method to separate the colors and black line. When I frogged it and started again, I decided to knit it in separate pieces and join them using a crochet zig-zag slip-stitch. This time I’m using a dark blue yarn instead of black. I also went down a needle size and blocked each piece before assembling.

The result? A fun patchwork-style top! A friend even told me it gives off a Mondrian vibe—what do you think?

Big Ideas from Small Stashes – From 3 Skeins to Two Finished Knit Projects
With a little creativity, just 3 balls of yarn (plus a bit of contrast yarn) can really go a long way.
If you’ve got a small yarn stash and no solid plan, I would say: just give it a go. You might end up surprising yourself like I did!
